THIS WEBSITE IS DEDICATED TO IMPROVING READING INSTRUCTION
BY PROMOTING THE WIDE USE
OF THE NEW 2014 EDITION OF FLORENCE AKIN’S 1913
Time Honored: Word Mastery is a time tested, classic approach to teaching reading with phonics. We believe it is the one of the most complete beginning phonics programs ever published.
Phonogram Approach: It uses the highly effective phonogram approach to teaching accurate and rapid word identification. There are no difficult diacritical marks to learn or complicated rules to master. Everything is taught in small, easy-to-master steps.
Scientific Basis: Word Mastery means just what the title says: the mastery of words. Although first published in 1913, Word Mastery is in perfect alignment with the most up-to-date scientific research into the acquisition of literacy. I highly recommend Stanislas Dehaene’s Reading in the Brain and Maryane Wolf’s Proust and the Squid for an understanding of the importance of mastery of the accurate and rapid identificaion of individual words and the development of the Letter Box in the reading brain.
Essential Components: It is interesting to note that Akin’s included highly effective instruction in phonemic awareness in 1913 under the term, Ear Training. The program includes
1. Ear Training (Phoneme Awareness)
2. Tongue Training (Phoneme Production)
3. Eye Training (Symbol to Sound Correspondences)
4. Word Building (sounding-out to identify words)
Beginning and Remedial Students. Florence Akin wrote, “When the pupils enter the class from a school in which this phonic course has not been taught, the most satisfactory method of preparing them for work with the class is to take them rapidly over the work which the class has covered. Whether pupils complete this course in one year, one and one half, or two years, when they have completed it their ability to read anything they can comprehend is assured (p. 112)
Word Mastery in the Hands of the Students. In most phonics based reading approaches, the phonics is tucked away, hidden from view, in the Teacher Manual and worksheets. The RIGHT place for the phonics is in the hands of the students. This way everybody (parent, teacher, and student) can know exactly what page the student has mastered and which pages remain to be mastered. The approach is scientific, developmentally appropriate, leaves nothing to chance.
THE MASTERY OF WORDS WITH WORD MASTERY IS
THE KEY TO HIGH READING AND SPELLING ACHIEVEMENT FOR EVERY CHILD.
